Abby Stovall – 2018 SNF Scholarship Award Recipient

High School Attended: Denton Guyer High School

College: Texas A&M

Major: Political Science

Middle school is often a time period in people’s lives they try to forget. For Abby Stovall, it’s a time she’ll always remember. Her love for history and politics all started in eighth grade U.S. History, when her teacher “somehow managed to obtain the undivided attention of a 13-year-old by talking about the American Revolution.”

From that point on, Abby has been fascinated with our country’s past and how it politics and the American government in the present. She’s known she was destined to study history and politics since she entered high school.

In 2017, Abby got the opportunity to attend Texas Bluebonnet Girls State. She learned the inner workings of Texas and federal government, performed the same duties as real elected officials, and grew her leadership skills among her peers. While she discovered she didn’t want to be a politician herself, she knew she may have a different calling — working behind the scenes to improve society through political change.

Abby says one of her dreams is to manage campaigns for political candidates. Without being a politician herself, she still wishes to positively influence American politics. “Those who work in politics and government have the responsibility to exhibit leadership and to make a difference,” Abby said. As a recipient of the SNF Scholarship Award, she’ll have a little help doing that as she prepares to begin her first year in college.

Abby will attend Texas A&M University in the fall to study political science. She also hopes to continue her education and earn a Master’s degree in public service from TAMU’s Bush School of Government and Public Service. Ultimately, Abby hopes to pass on her love of American history, politics and ideals to the next generation.
