Audrey Guzman – 2018 SNF Scholarship Award Recipient

High School Attended: Braswell High School

College: Texas A&M

Major: Accounting | Finance

Audrey Guzman has never been a stranger to hard work. When it comes to academics, she’s been used to having to work a little harder than other students since elementary school. While most toddlers get ready to go to preschool at 4 years old, Audrey’s mother preferred to teach her daughter at home in these formative years. But Audrey’s mother only spoke Spanish; so when she joined her peers in elementary school, so did she.

The English as a Second Language program at Audrey’s elementary school gave her the opportunity to learn English, but also meant she was pulled out of regular class time to learn it. Because she didn’t have as much time in her regular classes to learn the material, she always knew she’d have to work harder to keep above average grades.

Audrey didn’t let those obstacles get in her way. She started to develop a love for numbers and math in fifth grade, and challenged herself in other courses by taking pre-AP classes in middle school. She continued on that trend by taking AP classes at Braswell High School. The workload was heavy, but nothing she wasn’t used to.

“All the time spent learning and studying (English) has paid off,” Audrey said. “It has allowed me to be in a position where I can choose where to continue my education.”

As always, she made the choice that would challenge her. Audrey was accepted to and hopes to attend Texas A&M University in the fall to study finance or accounting. “I believe in pursuing excellence and this can be done by determination and hard work,” she said.

The only thing limiting Audrey from attending is the financial commitment. She has decided after years of her parents providing a good life for her, she wants to pursue college on her own dime. Receiving the SNF Scholarship Award makes her one step closer to doing that. In the future, Audrey hopes to lead existing and emerging businesses into financial success.
