Ahlbany Bruner is a natural-born leader. She has perseverance and is mature beyond her years. She’s spent much of her educational career overcoming adversity, coming out as one of the few African-American students in the top 10 percent of her graduating class at Ray Braswell High School. She credits her scholastic accomplishments with giving her the winner’s mentality she has today. She believes not only can she do anything she puts her mind to, but she can do it while inspiring others in their time of trouble.
Growing up, Ahlbany experienced various hardships when she felt like there was no one she could turn to for help. As a result, she wants to become the person others can turn to in their time of need. “I feel that it is my purpose and responsibility to be that beacon of light in someone’s life” Ahlbany said. That passion for helping others has turned into a dream of becoming a high school mathematics teacher.
Ahlbany first felt called to education after helping fellow students understand previously confusing concepts. Seeing that “light bulb” moment of clarity gave her heart joy, and she knew she wanted to make a name for herself by educating future generations. “If I am able to influence just one person, I truly believe that my work would not be in vain,” she said. While one would be enough, she prays her influence will reach thousands of future leaders that come through her classroom. The SasserNation Foundation Scholarship will help her get the education she needs to pass it on to her future students and be the change she wishes to see in the world.
